This year has been the busiest year of my life. The Starbucks equivalent of Spotify Wrapped informed me that I have been to 29 stores in 24 cities in 2024—no wonder I’ve been tired. The year has been full of high highs (publishing Mia and the Martians, finishing the last paper of my PhD, bucket-list travel to Venice, and starting a nonprofit for women in space) and low lows (losing my beloved grandfather, being sick too many times, being denied a fellowship I’d dreamed of for six years, and feeling depressed about the election outcome).
Amid the chaos, I’ve developed systems and strategies to not just survive but also make this whirlwind year meaningful. While 2024’s lessons are still sinking in, I’m focused on building a better, more sustainable 2025 by addressing the things I can control. With that, here’s my stress-tested guide for thriving as a busy, on-the-verge-of-burnout human:
Pick a uniform to wear
Decision fatigue is real, and a go-to outfit can help streamline mornings. I’m a loyal J.Crew sweater-and-jeans/slacks girl, especially in winter. Having a reliable fallback means one less decision and a smoother start to the day.Movement Really Does Matter
This year, I leaned into ClassPass, which allowed me to work out while traveling constantly. The variety kept me engaged, while my at-home backup, FORM, ensured I could squeeze in quick workouts even on hectic days. I feel the difference when I move consistently—it boosts my energy and focus.Offload Decision Fatigue
I minimize decision-making stress by relying on routines, a set menu, and my personal life assistant, Duckbill.ai. From scheduling dental appointments to mailing copies of Mia and the Martians, Duckbill has been a game-changer. It’s easily the best tool I’ve added to my life this year.
Reconnect with Your Hobbies
For me, reading has been the ultimate act of self-care. This year, I leaned into it like never before—reading every night, browsing at Barnes & Noble with hot cocoa, and enjoying audiobooks on Libro.fm and Spotify. Whether it’s ten minutes before bed or a midday escape, finding time for my favorite pastime has grounded me.Stay Connected to Loved Ones
Phone calls with family and friends remain one of my most important rituals, just as they were in undergrad. Whether during a walk while cooking or in between meetings, these moments remind me of my incredible support system—and they almost always lead to laughter. (More on this idea here)
As I reflect on 2024, I’m struck by how both the highs and lows have shaped me. While I couldn’t control everything, I’ve realized the power of being intentional with the parts of life I can influence. These strategies are my toolkit for navigating busy seasons—and they’ll be the foundation for a more balanced and fulfilling 2025.
Here’s to building a year that celebrates progress, resilience, and joy—without the burnout. What strategies have you found most helpful for managing a chaotic year? Let me know in the comments; I’d love to hear your perspective!
